Match Scale & Complexity

Matching scale and complexity to the challenge at hand is an important concept in Network Design.

Match Network Scale and Complexity to Scale and Complexity of your challenge

In an increasingly complex world, our military fields an ever-higher proportion of special forces (Navy Seals) because small teams are better suited to a world of Velocity, uncertainty, Complexity and Ambiguity. Likewise, you need to be fielding small teams against your toughest challenges.

If this were true at the national scale, one would expect Economic complexity to be a key ingredient to economic success. This is in fact the case with Economic complexity predicting GDP Growth better than any known measure. This first principle of matching scale and complexity.

The parts must conform to the whole

This is the essence of understanding the relative and Absolute – the parts must conform to the Whole. But there is always something in the whole that is not in the parts. Thus we cannot reduce “things” to “things”. As there is always a magic new ingredient at each level that didn’t exist before that arises from the interaction. It is emergent. It emerges as refined steel does by the folding upon itself of reality - in an ongoing fractal and holographic dance.
